PTSA Book Club: 9 AM: “Nurture Shock”

Tue., Mar 30

The PTSA Book Club is BACK! Parents are raving about Po Bronson & Ashley Merryman’s newest book, "NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children." We hope you can join our discussion! This book club is sponsored by the LCHS 9-12 PTSA, but we hope that junior high parents and others will join us. You don’t have to have a kid at LCHS to come!

Book Description:
Bronson contends "that many of modern society’s most popular strategies for raising children are in fact backfiring because key points in the science of child development and behavior have been overlooked. Two errant assumptions are responsible for current distorted child-rearing habits, dysfunctional school programs and wrongheaded social policies: first, things work in children the same way they work in adults and, second, positive traits necessarily oppose and ward off negative behavior. These myths, and others, are addressed in 10 provocative chapters that cover such issues as the inverse power of praise (effort counts more than results); why insufficient sleep adversely affects kids’ capacity to learn; why white parents don’t talk about race; why kids lie; that evaluation methods for giftedness and accompanying programs don’t work; why siblings really fight (to get closer)."

CSF Applications Due April 2

Fri., Apr 2

CSF Membership is based on scholarship and is gained after qualifying grades are earned each semester. In order to become a member, the student must submit an application each semester the student is eligible. A point system specified in the CSF State By-Laws establishes the membership requirements.  To secure eligibility for CSF membership, a student must earn sufficient points from pre-approved course lists.  The majority of the required membership points must come from University of California accepted course work.
Life Membership (Gold Sealbearer status) is achieved by qualifying four or more semesters in the last three years of high school, and earns the CSF Gold Seal on diplomas and transcripts.  These students are also eligible to be nominated by the chapter adviser for the Seymour Memorial Awards.

Seniors MUST meet this deadline in order to qualify for Gold Sealbearer Status since one of the four semesters must include senior year grades.

Your student may pick up and drop off applications with Mrs. Cho in Room 206, or you may print one out here.  Your student may also stop by to ask Mrs. Cho how many semesters he or she has been a member so far.

DEADLINE: Completed applications and dues must be in by Friday, 4/2, to Mrs. Cho in Room 206.

Laws that Affect Teens / Students

Wed., Jun 30

Kids & the law coverDid you know that:

  • Kids can legally be out past curfew if they’re participating in a religious, educational or political activity?
  • In developing a school dress code, parents must be involved in the decision-making process?
  • Parents are often liable when their kids damage, destroy or deface others’ property?

These and other California laws that might concern children and their actions are explained in a VERY readable format in the California Bar Association’s publication, Kids & the Law: An A-Z Guide for Parents. Topics covered include driving laws, drugs, alcohol, online predators, juvenile court, and much more.

Kids and the Law addresses a number of issues important to parents of minor children including:

  • curfews
  • emancipation
  • drugs and alcohol
  • dress codes
  • children’s privacy
  • truancy
  • juvenile court
  • crime (graffiti, weapons, fighting, etc.)
  • driving

There are two other similarly excellent publications: When You Become 18: A Survival Guide for Teenagers and Seniors & the Law: A Guide for Maturing Californians
